As a traditional time for “turning”, the season of Lent offers us a chance for a re-examination of our relationship with God and our neighbor in our individual lives and in the Body of Christ we serve in the world. In these forty days, we are given an opportunity to prepare ourselves for the mystery of Good Friday/Easter by creating a space for God's creative work in our lives, through prayer, discipline and re-assessment of the work we do in the communities we serve. By expanding the time we spend in daily prayer, relinquishing a habit that proves to be a barrier to a more robust life with the divine or committing ourselves to new work in the world, we can make Lent a window onto the tranformative presence of God in our lives.
On Ash Wednesday, we are reminded of our unity with the earth from which we came as ashes are imposed on our foreheads with the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”; during Holy Week, we re-enact the final events of Christ's earthly ministry. The time between these events is an opportunity to renew our awareness of God's desire for our return and the love that underlies our discipleship.
We have many programs to help expand and support our spiritual lives during this season of renewal. Please join us!
February 17:
Ash Wednesday: Imposition of Ashes and Holy Eucharist at 7am, 9:30am and 7pm.
February 20:
Lenten Quiet Day 9am- 12pm
A time of quiet reflection and prayer to prepare our hearts for the spiritual self-examination of Lent.
Sundays, February 21- March 21
Soup Supper in Parish Hall
6-7 pm A Choice Between Impossibles
A class facilitated by Rob Singer focused on an address by noted author Sister Joan Chittister on the healing effect of Benedictine values in a broken world. The only preparation required is a willingness to join in the discussion of what the adoption of Benedict's principles might offer to our individual lives and community.
Youth: The parish young people will be exploring 101 Ways to Pray, a cycle of lessons using the rotation model to examine the many methods of prayer available to us throughout Lent. They will use experiential learning, through such media as art, drama, movie, cooking and story-telling to explore prayer forms to be used in Lent and throughout the year.
Wednesdays, February 24- March 24
6:30 pm Stations of the Cross
7- 8 Where God Happens: A discussion of the book by Archbishop Rowan Williams on the theology and the sayings of the ancient mothers and fathers of the desert monastic tradition. Although this tradition flourished from the fourth through the sixth centuries, it has much to teach us about community and the love of God and neighbor.
